Mario Cuomo Signing a Bill Local 338 RWDSU/UFCW is proud to represent several hundred men and women working in New York’s cannabis industry in a variety of different roles, including cultivation, manufacturing and process, distribution, and retail. Local 338 members currently work at the New York facilities of The Botanist, Citiva, Cresco Labs / Sunnyside, Curaleaf, MedMen, PharmaCann, and Vireo Health.

Prior to the passage of the Compassionate Care Act in 2014, representatives from Local 338 worked with industry leaders, scientists, advocates and workers from across the cannabis industry to become better educated on the needs and issues of the industry and its workforce. Our participation in the legislative process in helping to craft the Compassionate Care Act has positioned Local 338 RWDSU/UFCW to be perfect working partner with New York’s cannabis workers. Our goal is to build a movement side by side with cannabis workers to ensure that the jobs created in the cannabis industry allow workers to have lifelong careers and earn their fair share of this highly profitable industry, as well as ensure that communities across the state have the opportunity to participate in this emerging field.

Mario Cuomo Signing a BillSince New York’s medical cannabis program officially launched in 2015, Local 338 has been successfully engaged in organizing efforts to ensure that the jobs in this new industry provide family sustaining wages and benefits. Our strong collective bargaining agreements provide our members in the cannabis industry with guaranteed wage increases, paid time off, quality healthcare benefits for workers and their families, access to retirement savings and on on-the-job training, amongst other invaluable workplace protections.

MedMen Members In Albany PharmaCann

Since the New York’s medical cannabis industry launched, Local 338 has continued to partner with a variety of different advocates to work together to improve access for patients, while also advocating for the legalization of adult-use cannabis. We are excited for the future of this industry and ensuring that it creates quality opportunities for workers and the communities in which they live.

On February 12th Local 338 members who work in the Cannabis industry spent the day in Albany to advocate the legalization of the Cannabis Industry in New York State. Our members spoke directly to lawmakers regarding the economic benefits and opportunities which will be created once the industry is legalized in NYS. Our members who work in the medical marijuana industry spoke at a press conference to explain how union careers will be widely available to the public once NYS green lights the recreational legalization of cannabis. Our members also met with other important union leaders, including NYS AFL-CIO President Mario Cilento, to discuss the future of unions with the cannabis industry. It was an incredibly productive day filled with exciting moments and enormous progress towards achieving our goal of full legalization.
