To the Members of Local 338:

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, you have put your lives on the line to ensure that members of the community are fed, have access to essential supplies and medicine, and continue to receive the care and services they rely on. Day after day you continue to work hard under the significant stress of not knowing if you will contract this virus or even worse, bring it home to your family. Despite the ongoing threat, you bravely continue to report to work to keep the stores stocked and the community served. This pandemic really has shown the rest of the world what we already knew - that the work you do each and every day is not only essential but is a lifeline to the community and for that, you are truly frontline heroes.

When the pandemic began many of your employers instituted what they called appreciation pay in recognition of the increased risks and demands assumed by their employees, but lets call it what it is its Hazard Pay - and you deserve it!

Tragically, many essential workers have become seriously ill and some have died from this virus. That reality hasnt changed as you are still on the frontlines and you are still risking your health and that of your family. It is clear that you deserve to be compensated for it.

Unfortunately, despite the fact that the threat from the virus continues, many companies have indicated that they intend to eliminate hazard pay over the next few weeks. This is wrong and we are fighting any plans to cut your wages.

We are currently in negotiations with many of the companies where you work and have made it very clear to them that hazard pay must be paid while we continue to be under the very real threat of COVID-19. We will be working with both our legal team and our International Union, the UFCW, to explore every possible legal option to challenge your employers decision should they be unwilling to maintain hazard pay for all their hardworking employees. We will also be taking our message to the public and asking the customers to stand with us in this fight to support you!

We will share updates as they come, but if you have questions please contact your Union Representative.
