New England Stop and Shop Rally

Date: Wednesday May 01, 2019

On April 18th, Local 338 joined striking Stop & Shop workers in Dorchester, Massachusetts to rally for the fair contract that they deserve. The 31,000 UFCW members made the difficult decision to go out on strike on April 11th after months of difficult negotiations where the company proposed cutting member’s benefits and standards, including raising the cost of healthcare and offering bonuses rather than the wage increases.

The rally drew the support of over a thousand union members, Stop & Shop customers, and community allies from across New England. Former Vice President Joe Biden, also spoke at the rally and he encouraged the workers not to give up and noted that they were “not being treated like they matter.”

On April 21st, the five New England UFCW Locals and the company reached a tentative agreement. After 11 days on strike, thousands UFCW members proudly returned to their stores to serve their customers and communities. In the coming days, they will vote on the agreement in the coming days. The strength and solidarity they displayed throughout this strike was not easy, and we congratulate them for standing up for what they deserve!
